Recently we stayed in South Fork and ate at the Shaft 2 times and ordered pizza's to go once. First time we visited was 8:00 pm on a Wednesday and there were 12 of us. They very quickly set up and seated us. Drinks arrived quickly but food took a little longer than we would have like since we were starving. One of the kids ordered a pizza that took a lot longer. They had run out of the brisket and of course 4 of us wanted to order it (including me) so I went for the pulled pork sandwich with fries. My hubby and I alway (wisely) ordered an appetizer of onion rings that were very good and killed the time waiting for the entrees. I understand there were a lot of us and I'm sure that's what delayed our meals. We went back the next night because honestly there aren't many places to eat and we knew they could accommodate our large group. We arrived around 6:30 pm (Thursday evening) and it was very busy. They couldn't seat us altogether so 8 did one group and 4 of us split off. The table of 4 which I was at seemed to have been forgotten, we weren't brought menus and several wait staff walked by not even asking if we needed help. Finally, a younger guy walked up and said you guys look thirsty. Have you ordered your drinks and we stated we didn't even have menus yet. He said he had been called in to help. We gave drink orders which came quickly and ordered pretty quickly after that. The food still took a while as more customers came and went. Our food was served by a different girl and she said she had been called in to work too. I don't think we saw anyone again until we were finished eating. This night the brisket was available and3 at my table ordered that. I had the turkey, bacon, avocado sandwich and it was very good. I would have liked the turkey to be warmed just a little. I asked for a togo menu so we could order pizza the next night and they gave me one of the in house menus. I asked when we should call and was told early, before 5:30 pm. Friday night I called at around 5:05 pm and ordered 3 large and one small pizza and they were ready for pick-up by 5:30. The pizza is thick and could have been cooked just a couple minutes longer but were good enough for our large group. If we were in the area, we'd go back again to try other things and I do recommend the onion rings!

Amazing cheesecake we visited this place for dessert after dinner and they were open later than most places in town. We really enjoyed the local people. One of the girls in the group doesn't consider a dessert a dessert unless it has chocolate but the cheesecake was so good the said it would count as dessert!

A decent place to eat. The pork chop I had was truly grilled over open fire. The potato was cooked perfectly and the wine-sauteed mushrooms broccoli and zucchini were tender but not devoid of any turgor. All in all a good meal, not too big--just right, as Goldilocks would have said!

Don't let the menu deceive you, avoid the burgers - they are dry, tiny, and tasteless. Everyone at my table was jealous of my chicken sandwich. The cheddar fries were great too. Beer selection was awesome too.

Surprisingly dreadful. I ordered a bbq brisket sandwich, which consisted of a (decent) kaiser bun covered in greyish brisket possessing a consistency more like boiled beef and very little evidence of slow smoking. The bbq sauce was insipid. My wife ordered a pizza with goat cheese (with waaay too many herbs), sundried tomatoes (like leather), artichoke hearts, pesto (at least it said so on the menu...none was evident), and pine nuts (way too many), on what was basically a pita. We both had the salad bar, which was passable, ignoring the broccoli which looked fresh but emitted an odor suggesting it might have been embalmed. If I had to guess, I would say that almost everything we were served came from a can. All that for $81 including tax and tip. I would give it fewer stars, except we didn't get sick and if you're driving east and ravenous after skiing at Wolf Creek, like we were, it may be one of your only choices.

This place stays open later than most other restaurants, especially on snowy days, so it very easily gets very crowded and the waitstaff run behind on their tables and taking orders. That's a small price you have to pay for good food and friendly staff, and unfortunately, sometimes unavoidable (especially if you go during the height of ski season, like my boyfriend and I). We actually ended up coming here on three separate occasions because we stayed at the Spruce Lodges which are right next to the restaurant. Literally, right next door, you walk for 30 seconds and you are there). #1: Had lunch after driving in, we both ate burgers. BF had the mushroom swiss burger which he liked except for the overabundance of mushrooms and I had the plain cheeseburger which was delicious. Their fries were a little bland and not very crispy, but not soggy either. #2: Came to get to-go to take back to the hotel room at around 620 pm. Holy heck, it was SUPER CROWDED. The waitress kept apologizing because they ran out of food (such as pizza), all the tables were waiting for food for longer than 20 min and they had so many large parties sitting and waiting. However, we got in and out relatively quickly. We placed our orders (chicken fried steak for him, chef salad for me) and waited at the bar (located adjacent to the restaurant, same place). The bar was out of beer glasses, that's how busy they were. Good prices for the beer. We waited about 20-25 min for our food but the waitress packed it up quickly and got it out to us. She forgot our Cokes, but no problem because I found her and reminded her. When we got back to the hotel, my salad had no ranch on it :( The chicken fried steak was good, steak was a little bit tough, and the mashed potatoes on the side was very well made. Huge portion too. #3: Ate dinner, chicken fried chicken for the BF (which he loved the most out of all 3 meals) and breaded pork chop for me. The breaded pork chop was very tasteless and I salted that thing up like crazy. We both got salads from the salad bar, which had limited choices, but very fresh veggies. Not a bad place to eat at all. Minor hiccups due to the dinner rush, but nothing major, and we got nothing but friendly service the entire time.

Like other reviews, we found The Shaft to be an "ok" place to eat. Typical bar food in a bland environment. Food was definitely overpriced for what you get.

New Owners Great food. Had the house salad with blue cheese ....Fantastic Had the Rio Grande pizza delicious My brother had the pulled pork dinner There was not a bite left. Great service.(Natalie) Manager checked in twice to make sure we were happy! Great job!

Good meal. Pleasant atmosphere. Your choices are limited in South Fork, but this place did a good job by us and I have no complaints. The only reason for the lack of fifth star is the lack of sweet tea.

We unfortunately didn't have a very good experience. According to the lodge next door this is the place but that was not the case. It is nice inside and very roomy. But not a whole lot of positive to say. First i ordered some pizza (which normally i wouldn't think you could screw up) but they some how did. My pizza was super saugy and nasty, i didn't even finish half. The kids got chicken finger that tasted straight out of a microwave. And finally cant remember what wifey had but i know she didn't enjoy it either. The one thing we did like was they did bring me a huge Ice-tea with lots of ice . I hope to get another chance to try again.

Stopped in today. Cute, clean place. Neat old pictures on the wall. Food serving was generous. Smoked turkey sandwich was yummy. Baked beans were thick and tangy. Husbands pulled pork sandwich was big. Service was nice.

Considering the options you have in South Fork, this place is great. The owner who also waited out table was extremely attentive, the food was fresh and delicious. The wings were the best we've had. Pleasant atmosphere and pleasant service. Considering the owner has only had it for a month he is doing a fantastic job! I hope his business takes off, South Fork needs it.

NOT THE SAME OLD SHAFT The restaurant sold to a new owner and is under new management. The old restaurant had its issues, hence the bad reviews. Notice that there are no bad reviews since it reopened July 2014.

We'd been here several times before and it was prompt and delicious. This time she took our order, we waited 48 minutes and I finally stopped her and asked if it would be long for our APPETIZER. She went to check and they'd lost our order. Then she came out a little later with chili fries when we ordered cheese fries. They at least comped them. And the food was really good. The music was a touch loud, but okay for a weekend night I guess. But the wait was crazy unacceptable. We finished our meal and waited another half hour for 3 people who walked by to even acknowledge us to get our check. I'd avoid unless they have another management change.

We were a group of eight hungry after a long day of skiing. We were seated right away and then not acknowledged for forty-five minutes although one waitress (the one who seated us) clearly saw us. We ended up scrounging up our own menus from other tables, and had to stand at the back to flag down a waitress for our orders. After we finally got a waitress to acknowledge us, I have to give her credit: she was fast and friendly. Prices were very reasonable ($112 for 8 and most folks had beers). The vegetarian pizza had an excessive amount of mozzarella and scant veggies. The buffalo wings were decent, and the burgers looked good.

Went here two nights, one night for drinks and the other for dinner and drinks. Both nights were fun and we had a great time. Didn't hang out in the restaurant, but the bar was great and the bartenders knowledgable. The chicken fried chicken kept my girlfriend happy while I had the wings (which were perfectly cooked and sauced) and the jalapeño burger. Definitely worth a stop and probably the best food in town!

Not bad considering it was the only restaurant in town that wasn't "closed for the season." We ordered the roast beef sandwich with baked beans, cheeseburger with french fries and onion rings, and veggie pizza with goat cheese. The roast beef sandwich was hot and cheesy, with just the right amount of spice from the onions and bell peppers. The veggie pizza turned out to be a delightful surprise. It was fresh and flavorful--a miracle considering the isolated location of the restaurant. It was even better than some of the pizza's I've had here in town. Since this was the only place in the vicinity that was open, we ate here for dinner as well. We opted for takeout and were surprised at how quickly our order was ready. By far the best crispy chicken salad I've ever had. The tomatoes could have been fresher (they were soft and mealy), but the bleu cheese dressing was thick, chunky, and tasty. A very filling meal to end a tiring day. Not bad for a place in the boonies.

The food was mediocre but it was painfully obvious the staff had no clue what they were doing. Long waits even though there were empty tables. Waited long time to order and food trickled out over a 45 minute period so half the group was finished eating before others were served.

Stayed the night in South Fork for a day of skiing up at Wolf Creek. There is very little in this town but they do have some fun spots e.g The Shaft! The restaurant is divided into two parts a dinning room and a bar. We opted for the bar. The dinning room was packed and the bar was full but not overly crowded. I loved the wood burning fireplaces which are in both sections of the restaurant. The menu has a nice selection of food and the bar has local beers from the area on tap! Everyone is super friendly, the bartenders, the staff. The owner is also the cook and he came out and was chatting people up at the bar, suggesting hidden places for great skiing. Awesome bar/restaurant for being in a far off place. One of those unexpected gems!

I am so incredibly disappointed with this place. Four of us were in the mood for a quick slice of pizza and this place was recommended (perhaps because it may be the only place with pizza in town) and we were all so famished and excited to eat. We were the very first and only people in the restaurant which has an interesting, cafeteria-style ambiance. It took us a while to get someone out front to seat us and once we were seated most of us were shocked by the prices. You can only order either a 10" personal pizza for about $10 or a 16" pizza for about $22. Keep in mind we only wanted a slice each. So two of us shared one personal pizza, one got his own, and the last person ordered a bratwurst with sauerkraut and baked beans. I shared the vegetarian pizza with pesto, goat cheese, olives, tomato, and artichoke hearts - at least that's what I thought I would get. Turns out they were out of goat cheese and decided to replace it with mozzarella. SERIOUSLY? That completely changed the whole pizza and we got something other than what we wanted to order. The pizza was definitely too big for one person and it was terrible. There was no visible pesto, the thin crust tasted like cardboard, and why in their right mind would they exchange goat cheese with mozzarella?! The pizza was so soggy from all the ingredients that as soon as you pick up a slice everything slid off faster than a South Fork avalanche and I had to eat my pizza with a fork. The bratwurst was basically a verrry tiny hot dog in an over sized bun and was not tasty for the girl eating eat. The server was nice and sweet but the group of 4 that came in after us was served 10 minutes before us. It took us 30 minutes to wait for our awful food and only 2 seconds to get a heart attack from the $40 bill. I definitely don't recommend this place - you're better off driving a little bit and getting much better, more affordable food.

I read the reviews but we went anyway because it was convenient and there aren't lot of options in town. Food was ok. .. burgers were definitely off the Cisco truck. Wings were terrible, onion rings were standard frozen Cisco fare. I read reviews about local microbrews but they only had 3 on tap (only 2 were local)...Fat Tire, Alamosa Amber and the third was as the waitress put it, "a black beer" of some sort. Was like pulling teeth to get her to find out what type of beer it was. Ended up being a tasty stout from a brewery in Del Norte. Oh, and get there early on busy weekends.

Had a great meal here tonight. Ordered steak medium rare and it was cooked perfectly. The chef came out and said he was afraid part of it would be a little too done because it was thinner on one side. It was great, and seemed to be a lot bigger than the menu said. The baked potato was huge. The side of sautéed vegetables was excellent. The chef came out again and asked if everything was ok. I said I especially liked the veggies and he sat down and told me how he prepares them. The apple pie for dessert was tasty but not great. I only gave a 4 star rating because I realized after I left that I didn't get the bowl of soup that came with the meal. I certainly didn't need it in top of the large portions I was served. I even have leftover steak for lunch tomorrow.

My family and friends have all camped near South Fork, CO for over 15 years. We have never really found any restaurants worth writing about, but my mom and grandmother both went out on their own after a long raft trip, and found The Shaft. They came back with high praises and told us we had to go back with them~ I am now on a low fat diet, so I went to the salad bar first. It was stocked with fresh and tasty veggies. There were not a lot, but the basics were there and they were good. I also had a juicy chicken breast marinated perfectly in some sort of olive oil/basil blend. It was very good and my husband like it too. We had 15 people at our table, we never had to wait for our glasses to be refilled. The waitress was pleasant and efficient. The manager came to our table several times to make sure everything was satisfying. There were locals as well as visitors at the restaurant and everyone seemed happy with their food choices. We liked it so much, we went back 2 more times within the next week. We always had good service and good food. They were reliable and hospitable. We had no surprises on the ticket. We also liked the green chili soup... I have to mention, the pizza was great! They ran out of it the 2nd time we were there. My mom and grandmother even ordered one to go to take back to the campsite! The crust was not too thick, but crisp and tasty. The cheese and other ingredients were full of flavor. They have so much to offer, if you ever are traveling in the cool mountains of South Fork, try out The Shaft, they are not going to "Shaft" you!
